Lack of Sleep

If your loved one is having problems sleeping at night, then chances are you are also awake with them. Many family caregivers ignore their sleep deprivation until it finally becomes to take a toll on their physical and mental health. By getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep, you will have more energy, become more alert, have a better attitude, and be able to care for your elderly loved one much easier. There are several things that can be done to help your elderly parent sleep better at night for your own sanity.

  • Create a consistent wakeup and bedtime schedule
  • Keep the room dark and cool in order to make it easier for the elder to sleep
  • Avoid alcohol or caffeine after 5 p.m.
  • Talk to their doctor to find out if any of their medications could be interfering with their sleep

If these tips do not help your loved one sleep better, discuss this problem with their physician.

Lack of Privacy

Caregivers usually do not get the privacy they want when caring for their aging loved one. This is especially true when living in an apartment or small home. Once you are done caring for the elder, you need some time to yourself to unwind and relax. Increase the amount of privacy you receive with the following tips.

  • Discuss a set of household rules with the elder in order to inform them of what area in the home will be your own personal space
  • Do not put vacations or other enjoyable activities on hold due to your caregiving responsibilities
  • Use respite care in order to get the break you need by having an elder care provider take over for you

Becoming Overwhelmed

From helping your loved one bathe, use the bathroom, eat, and get dressed to having to drive them to appointments and to run errands, being a caregiver can be exhausting. You may feel like you have to do it on your own, but that is not the case at all. If you have other friends or family members who would be able to help you, let them. Delegate the caregiving tasks among those who are willing to help in order to take a huge weight off of your shoulders.
