4 Ways to Show Yourself Some Extra Care as a Family Caregiver

As a family caregiver, you could use some extra TLC. Most often, that little bit of extra care can really come from your own actions.Caregiver-in-Guelph

Be Alert for Signs of Stress or Depression

Stress and depression can sneak up on you quickly when you’re a family caregiver. Make sure that you’re aware of the signs of both so that you can examine your behavior and your emotions regularly. If you do spot signs that you think are related to either stress or depression, you’ll be able to take steps quickly to get treatment for yourself.

Take Respite Time

If you’re not taking time away from being a caregiver, that can cost you time and energy in the long run. Do the best for yourself, which means taking time away to do the things that you love and enjoy. You don’t have to take hours away from your loved one every day, either. A half hour every day to read a book or to take a walk can do just as much for you as if you took a lengthy vacation. There’s no right or wrong way to take respite time, unless you simply don’t take it at all.

Seek Out Support for Yourself

You’re the support system for your elderly loved one, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need support yourself. Your own support system can be made up of a variety of different people and entities that help you to get through your time as a caregiver. Some ideas for a support team include:

  • Support groups
  • Friends
  • Other family members
  • Home care providers
  • Your loved one’s medical team
  • A counselor or therapist

This isn’t a complete list, of course, and your own list may vary from the ideas included here.

Accept Help When it’s Offered

When someone does offer to help you, accept the offer graciously, even if it’s something you could do for yourself. Family caregivers often find that they don’t have help when they need it or want it. When you’re in that situation, sit down and ask yourself if you’ve been turning down help recently. If you have, you can create a situation where people stop offering to help at all because you consistently turn them down.

The more aware you are of your own condition, the better you’ll be at caring for your elderly loved one.
