#1 Cut Sugary Drinks

It can be easy to forget that the things we drink have just as much impact on our health as the things we eat. Drinks that contain sugar can really increase the amount of sugar your parent consumes during the day.  In fact, according to WebMD, one can of soda contains ten teaspoons of sugar! If your parent drinks soda, opt for sugar-free varieties.

#2 Lower Table Sugar by Half
The American Heart Association recommends that people try cutting the amount of table sugar they add to drinks like coffee or tea, or to their morning cereal by half.  From there, reduce the amount slowly until your parent isn’t using table sugar anymore.

#3 Sweeten with Fruit
If your parent sweetens their morning oatmeal or cereal with sugar, try using fresh fruit instead.  A handful of berries or a cut up banana add a touch of sweetness and lots of great flavor.  They also give your parent a serving of fruit and lots of important nutrients.

#4 Reduce Sugar in Recipes
Try reducing the amount of sugar used in baking recipes.  You may be able to reduce it by half without even noticing a difference in the taste.  For some recipes, you can substitute unsweetened applesauce for sugar. Alternatively, use non-nutritive sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin, etc.).

#5 Eat Fruit for Dessert
Instead of a bowl of ice cream or a piece of cake, offer your parent a bowl of fresh fruit.

#6 Watch Out for Condiments
Condiments like ketchup and barbecue sauce can contain a lot of sugar. Swap them out for lower-calorie options like mustard or salsa.

#7 Be Choosy About Canned Fruit
Canned fruit is a nutritious and cost-effective way to ensure your parent eats enough fruit.  However, fruits canned in heavy sugar contain lots of sugar.  Choose fruit that is packed in water or natural juice.

#8 Read Nutrition Labels
Before purchasing something at the grocery store, read the nutrition label.  Often foods that are packaged to appear healthy aren’t as healthy as we’d like them to be.  For example, foods that are low-fat or fat-free often contain a lot of sugar to improve the taste.
