Elder Care Tips: Clarifying Your Care Expectations by Describing the Position

Elderly Care in Guelph

Being on an elder care journey with your aging parents means taking responsibility for their health and wellbeing, which, for many family caregivers, means taking the step of hiring an elderly Elderly-Care-Guelphhealth care services provider. This care provider can fill care gaps, be there for your parents when you are not able to be in the home with them, and handle care tasks that you are not able to handle on your own, whether because you have your own limitations that keep you from being able to handle the tasks successfully or because you or your parents are not comfortable with you handling them.

Due to the importance of this care provider’s role in  your parents’ life, you want to feel confident that you have chosen the right care provider, and that you are giving the best instruction possible to ensure that that care provider gives your parents the care that they need on a regular basis. This can be overwhelming and confusing, leaving you feeling like you are not sure that you can choose, or have chosen, the proper provider for your aging loved ones.

One way that you can take some of this pressure off of yourself and make yourself feel more confident throughout the entire process, both before you have hired the elder care provider and throughout the care relationship, is to sit down and write a job description. The elder care agency that provides the care providers will have carefully vetted each care provider, but writing out your own description of what you want in that provider and her services can help you to clarify your expectations, select the appropriate care provider out of the options from the agency, and ensure that the provider continues doing what you expect her to do.

Use these tips to help you write a “job description” that will clarify your expectations for an elder care provider and help you to keep that care provider on track with her services:

• Read other job descriptions. Visit a few job listing sites to read through job descriptions so you can see how they are worded. You might notice that most of them are very concise and straightforward, putting all of the information possible into just a few sentences. This will help you learn to structure your description.

• Use adjectives. Think about the type of person you would like caring for your parents. If you could choose four words to describe her, what would they be? By narrowing the characteristics down to these simple, straightforward words you can zero in on what is important to you when it comes to that person, such as being punctual, friendly, enthusiastic, energetic, friendly, or patient.

• Be specific. Job descriptions list specific skills of the ideal candidate. Take this approach when writing your description by thinking about what you would say if you wanted the “perfect” person to respond to the description. While you will not actually be looking for respondents, approaching it this way clarifies in your own mind what you expect the care provider to do for your parents on a daily basis. This should specify the actual care activities that you want performed for your loved ones, and how you would like them fulfilled.
