Home Care in Etobicoke: How to Help Your Aging Loved One Deal with Depression

Depression is common among the elderly, but that doesn’t mean that is it something that should be ignored.

If you or your a home care aide have noticed a change in your aging loved one’s personality, or any other symptoms of depression, such as sadness, lethargy, lack of interest, or even physical aches and pains, there are many ways you can help them to feel better. Some of these ways include:

  • Simply being there for them – Depression is a very lonely feeling. You feel as if you are all alone in the world, and that no one understand what you are going through. Just having someone you love nearby can make a world of difference, because sometimes just talking to someone can boost a person’s mood. Even if your aging loved one lives alone or with the help of a home care aide, it is important to visit and talk to them often, so that they know that you are still there for them when they need you.
  • Find something they are interested in – Helping your senior to find a hobby or an activity that interests them will give them a way to keep their mind off of their troubles. Find something that they can really get engaged in, such as doing puzzles or building model airplanes, or even joining a club or a sports team at a local senior center.
  • Consider getting them a pet – If your loved one is capable of caring for one, or if you would like to add a new member to your family, consider getting a pet for your senior. Being responsible for the well-being of another creature can give them motivation to get up and stay active, and give them a new sense of purpose. Plus, who could be upset when they are cuddling a puppy or a fluffy cat?
  • Exercise – Exercise is important for everyone’s physical and mental health, but it is especially important for those suffering from depression. Exercise increases the chemicals in your brain that lead to a good mood, and this can help to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Even if your loved one has an illness or mobility issues, there are still ways for them to be active. Find a workout routine that works for them – or perhaps even consider joining them in getting fit!
  • Eating right – It doesn’t do any good to try to treat the brain when the body isn’t being treated properly. As many trainers and health gurus are quick to tell you, if you put garbage into your body, you are only going to get garbage out of it. Don’t let your loved one live on junk food alone, make sure that they are getting plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats in their diet. Studies have shown that cutting down on sugar can greatly improve mental health as well, so while a candy bar every now and then is fine, try to keep it within reason. If the body is healthy, the mind will be healthy, and your loved one will have much more energy and zest for life.

There are many ways to help your loved one to cope with depression. If you implement some of the above tips, you will surely see a marked improvement. If not, though, consider seeing a mental health care professional for more help and ideas.
