How is the Latest Phone Scam Targeting Elderly Women?

Senior citizens are targeted by scammers via phone, mail, and the internet because they’re more likely to pay. The generation doesn’t tend to be as suspicious of strangers asking for help. It’s estimated that financial fraud of the elderly will total almost $40 billion by the end of 2017.

Home Health Care in Richmond Hill: Phone Scam Targeting Elderly Women

There’s a new phone scam making the rounds, and this one specifically targets women. This scam preys on a person’s willingness to help authorities and to get a thief off the streets. Here’s what you need to know about it.

New Scam Targets Elderly Women

In the scam, women receive a call saying it’s an officer with their bank that wants to catch a thief. The thief is trying to steal money from bank accounts. If the elderly woman allows the bank to use some of her money, they can set a trap to catch the thief. The bank officer is nearby and can take the cash from her personally.

Once the money is sent, the scammers take off with the cash. There is no thief, and the caller was not a bank officer. The scam is prevalent in Canada, but it could become the next big scam in the U.S. soon. Keep your mom safe. Teach her about the latest scams and make sure she knows what to do if she gets a call, letter, email, or website alert.

Preventing a Scam

Your mom’s bank may not think twice about questioning her decision to withdraw cash or wire money to someone. Teach your mom that she needs to call you or another trusted friend or family member before she sends money to a stranger. If she cannot get hold of anyone, she should call the police and ask them if it’s legitimate or a scam.

You can also keep your mom from answering the phone. Spoofers mimic the phone number of someone local, so your mom may answer the phone and find she’s not talking to the person she thought was calling. If it’s a legitimate call, the caller will leave a message. Your mom can always call back once she knows who was calling.

Keep your mom safe from scammers. Make sure she has someone to talk to on a regular basis. Senior care services offer companionship, but they also provide beneficial services like meal preparation, transportation, and medication reminders. Learn more by talking to a senior care professional at an agency near you.
